New York State has 62 counties. While upstatenyroads.com covers primarily everything north of Interstate 287, I have decided to include the entire state on my "counties project".
In the summer of 2003, Earl and I decided that we would visit all 62 counties in New York State, primarily to obtain a picture of me standing next to a county line sign. As of December 2003, we had visited approximately 56 of them, with one final trip to the "North Country" planned for January 2004.
The New York metro area is divided into five boroughs (The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island), however the Big Apple spans five counties as well (New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, Richmond). These counties, however, are unlike the other 57 in that they no longer have separate "county services" nor do they have county seats.
Click on a county on the state map below, or click on a county name for more information. Note: I will fix the New York City and Long Island "clickable" regions on the map once I obtain the necessary information for those counties.
Many of the statistics on the individual county pages comes from Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia and individual county sites. The lists of towns and incorporated cities and villages came from a document entitled "Listing of Counties with Constituent Cities, Towns and Villages in New York State, available as as PDF file somewhere on the internet.
